Fall Foliage Scenic Drive - Central Vermont Area

This fall foliage scenic drive in Central Vermont offers some of the best views in the Green Mountain National Forest.

This scenic drive is a loop tour of about 150 miles. It follows mostly Route 12 south from Montpelier to Woodstock, before heading north on Route 100 and 100B back to Montpelier. There's a whole bunch of surprises on the way, but it's no surprise you'll experience some magnificent fall foliage views all along this scenic drive.

Bethel Woods

The tour is best done over the course of a weekend or several days, although it's possible to do the drive in one day and forgo many of the attractions and rambles suggested.

Let's get going...

Start from Montpelier, a small city on the northern fringe of central Vermont. Montpelier can be easily reached from Interstate 89. Montpelier is 182 miles from Boston and 198 miles from Hartford.

Take Route 12 out of Montpelier and head south to Northfield Falls. Northfield Falls has four covered bridges and the famous Falls General Store. Vermont has some of the finest examples of covered bridges anywhere in New England, but two of them in Northfield Falls can be seen at once, as you look through one to other. This is unique in New England and definitely worth taking the camera out to capture.

Continue on Route 12 making your way to Bethel.

Bethel is one of those Vermont towns that's a natural part of the scenery. Could this be why it's home to the White River National Fish Hatchery? The hatchery focuses on restoring Atlantic Salmon to the Connecticut River. It's open 8:00am - 3:00pm daily.

From Bethel you'll continue your last piece of the southern route to Woodstock.

The Woodstock area offers a number of attractions, including Billings Farm and Museum, and Quechee Gorge. Woodstock itself is one of those picture-perfect Vermont villages that's fun just to stroll around checking out the boutiques and restaurants.

The Billings Farm and Museum was established in 1871, and today it's a working farm, and a museum depicting farm life in the late 1800s.

Quechee Gorge is Vermont's little Grand Canyon. Not quite as big a hole in the ground as in Arizona, but at a mile long and plenty of hiking and walking trails on offer, it's a chance to stretch the legs and admire the splendid scenery. Be sure to walk to the picnic area overlooking the falls.

The next 20 miles of the scenic drive takes you cross country on Route 4 to Killington. Killington is a world famous ski area that covers six mountains. And at over 4,200' offers spectacular views from the summit. There's very few better places to appreciate the fall foliage than at the top of Killington Peak. If it's running take the K1-Gondola from base. You can ride the Gondola daily from September 24 - October 10th.

Killington is about the half-way point in this tour, and with the beautiful town of Rutland close-by plenty of lodging if you decide to linger overnight. Just be sure to make reservations during the peak fall foliage season.

The next section of the tour follows Route 100 as it borders the Green Mountain National Forest. You'll pass through the towns of Pittsfield, Hancock, Granville, and Waitsfield as you cover perhaps the most scenic views and diverse terrain you'll see on this drive.

Just North of Hancock and close to Route100 on Route 125 is Texas Falls. The trail to the falls is an easy hike and offers marvelous views anytime of the year, but especially during fall foliage season when the colors dazzle.

The larger of the two waterfalls is Moss Glen Falls just north of Granville a few miles up from Hancock. The drive from Hancock towards the falls is a two-lane winding road that passes through a seven mile stretch of untouched wilderness, and worth taking slow and easy.

The final leg of this central Vermont scenic drive from Granville to Middlesex and back to Montpelier continues to provide startling scenery and great photo opportunities. Route 100B connects with Route 100 just south of Moretown village, and you'll take 100B north to Middlesex and then join Interstate 89 for the quick hop back into Montpelier.

Vermonters quip the state really has five seasons - spring, summer, fall, winter, and the famous mud season. But my personal favorite in Vermont is the fall. Take this tour and you'll understand why.

School Days Are The Best Days Of Our Lives !

When I graduated back in 1972, that may of been true , but for many in this present time, the school days are filled with constant fear. A fear that after getting up, fixing their children breakfast, and getting them on the bus and off to school, that they may never see their child again ! You wait, you wonder, you pray for their safety while at school, and while in route.
But for some...?

February,19,1997 a quiet morning in Bethel Alaska,a 16 year old boy by the name of Evan Ramsey picks up a shotgun and a generous supply of shells and heads to school. He's not planning on show & tell either. He kills the schools principal a student, and injured two other people, before being taken into custody. He's now serving a 210 year sentence.

Bethel Woods

Why? What triggered it? What was lacking in the schools curriculum? Or was he acting out a scene he had viewed in a Hollywood movie?

October, 1 1997 A boy in Pearl Miss.,
shoots his mother, then proceeds to school where he starts shooting , and by the time the gun is empty, nine people lay injured on the ground, two fatally. Luke Woodham, is now serving
three life, plus 140 years.

Who is to blame for a senseless act of aggression such as this?

December is here,I guess back then it was politically correct to say Christmas is in the air, and happier times ahead!

But not so for several Heath High School students in West Paducah,Ky.

Dec,1 1997 eight people injured, three fatally, after gunfire erupts in the schools hall way, leaving one of the wounded girls paralyzed for life. Michael Carneal,14 years old, now stands guilty but mentally ill and pleads
guilty to murder. He now serves a life in prison sentence.

On March 24,1998 Two young boys of eleven and thirteen years of age open fire on a middle school in Jonesboro,Ark. ,while under cover in the nearby woods. Before the sound of gun fire fades, four girls, a teacher, lay dead, and another ten are seriously wounded.

April 24,1998, The Eighth grade graduation dance,Ah Yes, it's supposed to be a fun time, full of mistery and fantisizing about your first kiss, or going steady, a young man's dream! Not so for one young 14 year old boy. Andrew Wurst, shoots the science teacher in Edinboro, Pa. He plead guilty to third degree murder and receives a 30 -60 year sentence.

Jacob Davis who was an "Honor Student ", On May 19 ,1998 , just three days before graduation, Opens fire on another student just because he had gone out with his ex- girlfriend! The shooting took place in the parking lot at Lincoln County High ,In Fayetteville , Tenn.. He received just 52 years in prison, for taking another persons life.

A fitting sentence I suppose,If the person who's life that was snuffed out, would of only lived to the age of 52.

Lunch time ! May 21, 1998 . What could possibly happen while enjoying your dinner?
Two teen agers were killed and more than twenty injured when a fifteen year old boy opens fire who had previously killed his parents in Springfield Ore..Kip Kinkle, sentenced to serve 112 years in prison.

April 16,1999. A high school student in the tenth grade fires a couple blasts from a shotgun down a hall way. Thank God, No one was injured! Oh ,"I guess that expression of my faith would be inappropriate, and might cause offense to some one." Well maybe, If more were to be said about GOD in school, I wouldn't be having to write about the 175 fatalities (and rising) that has happened from 1997 to date!

Weren't the civil rights of these students just violated? Isn't it a civil right of a child to attend a public school with out being returned to their parents in a body bag? Wasn't it an Idea of our fore fathers ,when drafting The Constitution ,and The Bill of Rights (that were based on the Ten Commandments, that clearly define the difference between right and wrong) to keep things like this from happening?

I sincerely hope and pray that it never happens to one of your children! And if your child is one of the lucky ones to reach maturity and graduate,You think about this article, and remember that a "Christian " prayed for it to happen, then maybe you'll open your hearts and minds and believe!

Eric Harris 18,and Daylan Klebold 17,plot the deaths of many of their fellow students, planning strategic locations of improvised explosive devices for maximum devastation and killing power. attending gun shows and obtaining weapons ,and ideas from the internet, of how they were going to pull it off. April 20th 1999 Littleton,Colorado12 students, and a teacher, lay dead , 23 others seriously wounded . Columbine High School ,now dubbed the place of the deadliest school shooting in history. Columbine High, A community that it's school and faculty just want to move on,to forget,to heal.

It's students hold memorial services to remember their fallen friends. Some make tiles in remembrance of them with crosses and other religious symbols ,They turn to prayer,to GOD,for help to deal with the pain, but their stopped by the fear of the A.C.L.U. filing suit. So the school buckles under, backs down as many have cowardly done in the past. They turn and run from it,hoping it will just go away, while our children are falling and dieing.

People the statistics in my research go on and on and I could write about this until I'm physically ill. But it's up to you to change your future. It's been said, that some of our best plans for the future ,were already thought of and written in the past. Our fore fathers were right! They wrote it, it wasn't broken,so don't try to fix it.

The Nanticoke River - A Popular Largemouth Bass Fishing Destination

The Nanticoke River is certainly one of the best Eastern Shore Rivers for bass fishing. On weekends you will see tournament fisherman from several states because the river fishes "big enough" to accommodate 50-150 boat events. I have found breaking the river down into three basic sections helps new fishermen here avoid being overwhelmed by the river's size. These are main river/Seaford, Broad creek and finally Marshyhope Creek. Each of these areas has advantages and disadvantages for tournament fishermen and weekend fishermen alike.

Broad Creek

Bethel

This creek is very popular but has too many "no wake" zones between Phillips Landing and Laurel making it tough to "run and gun" in tournaments. Broad Creek is more sheltered in heavy winds and usually has clearer water the closer to Laurel you go.

Some of the best fishing can be found by markers #4 - 5 and 7 as the creek makes wide bends all the way to Bethel. Just past Bethel Bridge is a small pond to the right that is easily accessed from the river. This is a real hotspot at times and a guaranteed fish spot during the spawn. Further up the creek you will see tons of lay down trees and finally a couple of bridges and a spillway in Laurel. This area is all good but slow going because of boat traffic and obstructions in the narrow channel.

Seaford and Above

The main river and Seaford area makes jumping from spot to spot very easy because the river is wider with very few restrictions. You will have barge traffic and many pleasure boaters and the dreaded jet skis to contend with but the fishing is great. My favorite spots are the boat docks; woodland ferry crossing, pad lines and all the great small feeder creeks. The Seaford area has heavy industry with all the piling clusters for barges, bulkheads, a Railroad bridge and several good backwater areas. Between the railroad bridge and the Blades draw bridge there is a large marina with great fishing in the winter and during the spawn. Above the Blades drawbridge to the left is another backwater area leading to a dam with great fishing at times. Moving on up river past Route 13 Bridge the river splits into two branches. Both of these are fantastic in summer and fall but take time and caution to explore. Look closely and you will notice many new areas with grass. When fishing the Nanticoke remember the tide changes much earlier in Sharptown and Vienna than in Seaford so take full advantage of that "golden hour" when the bite is strong.

Marshyhope Creek

The Marshyhope fishes like a whole separate river and is easy to navigate when the pads are up. In winter or early season several bass boats have hit the mudflats thinking they were in the channel. This creek has always been best for me on falling tide with the last two hours being fantastic. Tournament fishermen have planted brush piles, weighted down wood pallets and even rock piles to enhance certain areas. These are all easy to find by watching your depth finder and slowly cruising pad line drops and creek mouths. There are several old wood boat wrecks on this creek that hold fish and some are visible on low tide so mark them with your GPS. Fish every creek mouth you can find on falling tides. Beaver huts are really bass magnets on this creek and any wood you notice out from the pad line on falling tide will hold bass consistently. Also fish the shallow bridge pilings, docks and all rip rap you see that helps break the current. Moving on up into the narrow wooded section look closely to your left and you will see a small pond called "Peggy's Hole". This is such a great spot during the spawn it is often put "off limits" in tournaments to avoid a boat race getting to it. The bass spawn much earlier than most people realize in this pond. Moving on towards Federalsburg you will notice a sandpit on your left that is also a spawn area that can be very good. In Federalsburg at the new ramp there is a small marina that never has boats tied up in it but is a good fishing spot. All the rip rap close by is good also. In fall always continue fishing all the way up past Federalsburg for the fish are there as the water cools. Now for the downside the Marshyhope has really strong current, gets muddy easily after rains or from boat traffic and is a fairly long ride from Phillip's Landing or Seaford ramps.

The Best Woods For Making A Shillelagh Stick

The shillelagh stick is something of an Irish symbol having originated in the emerald isle but is a popular item all over the world. Shillelaghs have been crafted from many different types of wood over the years. However, which wood is the best to use for a shillelagh is a matter of opinion. The preferred choice of wood has changed over time for a variety of reasons not least because of supply and demand.

People often ask me about the best woods for making a shillelagh stick. The truth is, most hard woods should suffice and will form a grand stick. Weight can be added courtesy of molten lead, if required. The original shillelaghs were made from oak. Legend says they were named after the famous shillelagh forest. Oak was a hard wood that was in plentiful supply although stocks became scarce in later years.

Woods

Blackthorn replaced oak as the wood of choice. Many Irish people speak fondly of the blackthorn. It certainly makes a fine shillelagh. It is a very dense, close grained wood and the size-to-weight ratio is just about perfect. This hard wood is also in very short supply so prices tend to reflect that. Ash is also widely used to make the shillelagh. This wood is famous for making baseball bats so it has a reputation for being a strong timber that packs a punch.

Woods like apple and hazel have a warm coloured grain and make good sticks although finding a good sized hazel can be a task in itself. It may come as a surprise to some but even maple and willow have been used to craft a desirable shillelagh stick. After reading this article, you should now have a better idea of what the best woods are for making a shillelagh. Now all you have to do is go find a suitable stick and make that shillelagh.

The Best Woods For Making A Shillelagh Stick

The author is an expert on the history and construction of the Irish blackthorn shillelagh. He is one of the few craftsmen who strive to keep the tradition alive today. You will find various Blackthorn Shillelagh cudgels for sale at his personal website. For more information relating to the shillelagh stick, please visit: Shillelagh resources.

A Review of the Sands Casino Resort - Bethlehem, PA

Location: 77 Sands Boulevard; Bethlehem, Pennsylvania 18015
Driving Distance: 85 miles west of New York City, 50 miles from Philadelphia
Open Since: Opened in 2009 after a delay
Hotel Accommodations: 300 hotel rooms scheduled to expand and will also include a planned 1,200 loft apartments.

The Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania was granted one of 5 licenses granted for a stand-alone casino in 2006 with the casino slated to open on the old Bethlehem Steel property in 2008. There were some delays however and the casino ended up opening its doors in the second quarter of 2009.

Bethel

It currently features 300 guest rooms in the hotel part of the resort and boasts a whopping 139,000 square feet of casino floors comprised of slots games. Future plans include expanding the hotel accommodations as well as adding 1,200 loft apartments, and a complete shopping complex. The theme of the casino is an industrial theme.

Presently you will find 7 notable restaurants including:

Emeril's Chop House St. James Irish Pub and Carvery The Market Gourmet Express Cobalt Café International Food Buffet Coil Molten

These restaurants offer a wide variety on their menus with enough different selections to satisfy any appetite. Bus services are presently available from key locations in New York, Philadelphia and New Jersey and they are encouraging more bus operators to register their service with the resort so that they may expand the service in the future to other areas.

The resort like most other casinos offers a wide variety of entertainment selections so for those who don't necessarily want to gamble, you're sure to find plenty to do even though the entire resort is not yet completed at the time of this writing. Once it is complete, in addition to the loft apartment expansion, the owners of the property are adding a complete shopping area for those who wish to do so that will be called The Shoppes at Sands that will include a variety of different retail stores.

The site sits on a total of 126 acres which allows plenty of room for the resort to expand. They have already donated a portion of the property to ArtsQuest who will be building a 3,500 seat theater and there will also be the National Museum of Industrial History located on the property, which will honor Bethlehem Steel.

For those who want to perhaps get away from the casino for a while, the local area is known well for its 39 different parks, and the well-known Musikfest that attracts more than a million people every year to the 10 day event. The city is also the home of the Southside Film Festival, which is a non-competitive film event and NEARfest, a highly popular 3 day progressive rock music event.

So if you want to get away for a while and have a good time while you're doing so, the Sands Casino resort in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania is a good choice for some place to relax and to get out and have some fun too.

A Review of the Sands Casino Resort - Bethlehem, PA

Dog Training - Bite Problems - Stop Your Dog From Biting!

A dog that bites is one of the dog owners worst nightmare. When it comes to dog training bite problems are among the most serious. Not only can a dog possibly injure its owner or a family member, but if a dog bites a neighbor or stranger, there can be serious legal and financial problems. A dog that bites is simply no fun to have as a pet. Before you think of getting rid of your dog, however, you should know that most behavior problems, including biting, can be successfully resolved.

Puppies That Bite

Bethel

A puppy who bites is not as serious a problem as a full grown dog. Many puppies who bite were taken from their mother too soon. The mother dog actually teaches her pups not to bite too hard. If this lesson was not learned, you are going to have to do the teaching. Buy chew toys for the puppy. This will give them something to chew on besides family members. When the puppy bites a person, give a yell, almost as an angry dog would. Don't strike the puppy, just yell. If this does not stop it, leave the room. Puppies don't like to be left alone, and will learn what kind of behavior creates this situation.

Young Dogs That Bite

If you acquired your puppy at a later age, or simply did not resolve the biting issue early, you have to start thinking a little differently. As a dog gets older, it seeks its natural place in the pack. A dog approaching maturity will bite others in the pack (and this may include you!) who it sees as subordinate. In other words, you have not established yourself as the alpha dog. One thing to pay attention to is how you feed your dog. If you always feed him first, this will contribute to his sense of dominance. So let the dog wait until you finish eating before feeding him. As with the younger puppy, make sure you show the dog that biting is not tolerating --yell a firm "no" and leave the dog alone when he bites.

Mature Dogs That Bite

A mature dog who bites presents the most challenging problem of all. There are some steps you can take that may resolve the problem. You can still keep the above suggestions in mind, as well as these:

For one thing, pay attention to when the dog bites. Owners sometimes provoke a fear reaction in dogs without knowing it. Standing over a dog when you greet him, then waiting for him to roll over, and then scratching his belly, for example, may seem like bonding behavior, but it's also creating a very submissive dog. This can also be a fearful dog, who snaps when frightened. Tying a dog with a chain or rope all day can also encourage aggressive behavior. If possible, change the place you keep the dog to a fenced in area.

Dog Training - Bite Problems - Stop Your Dog From Biting!

I know that I was worried about my dog biting and decided to do something to stop it right away. It is up to you whether you want to let it go or finally stop the dog training bite right now!

How to Become a Tiger Woods Like Putter

If you play golf you know that a missed two foot putt will cost you as many strokes on your score card as a 280 yard drive that splits the fairway. It is very unfortunate but most golfers don't practice their putting as much as they should, instead they go to the driving range and hit driver after driver and then wonder why they three putt on the greens, thus ruining what could have been a great round.

What we have put together are a few tips that will help you become more like a Tiger Woods putter and help you to alleviate those unnecessary stokes in your round.

Woods

How to Understand the Grain on the Green

Tiger Woods understands what the grain on the green is telling him. For example, the grain of the green will follow the sun. So when you are looking at your putt you need to locate the sun. This will let you know if you are putting with the grain, against the grain or across the grain. Knowing this will help you determine the speed of the putt and how much break to play. For instance, if you are putting downhill into the sun you are putting with the grain and you are going to have a very fast putt so you will need to add more break and just get it started online and gravity will do the rest.

Reading the Putt

Reading the putt correctly takes practice. Watch when Tiger is putting, he has a routine that he does every time (unless it is a tap in). He marks his ball, and then he proceeds to walk around the entire circumference of his putt. What is he doing? First he is looking at the grain, next he is looking at the angulations of the green and third, he is feeling the green. When he is walking around the green he is also feeling the green with his feet. This will help to feel slight angulations that maybe very hard to see. Try this sometime especially when you are playing an unfamiliar course you'll be surprised by what your feet will tell you.

Know the Local Knowledge

One thing that many golfers don't even think to do is learn the local knowledge. This can help you immensely on the course. What do mean by this? Well each course has its own little quirks, for example most putts tend to break towards the water. If you live near mountains you will learn that the course may lean toward the valley there for affecting your putt. This type of knowledge will help you become a more Tiger Woods like putter because he knows the local knowledge on all the courses he plays and knows that some putts may look like they should to the right but it actually does the complete opposite.

So in conclusion if you want to be a Tiger Woods putter and not a three putter-learn the grain, read the greens. And ask about the local knowledge for any course you play.

Tiger Woods Golf Swing - Simple Exercise Tiger Woods Practise

Every golfer wants to emulate Tiger Woods golf swing and it is possible with the right information. One way that Tiger Woods golf swing gives him power and length off the tee and in the fairway with his irons, is that he uses a full back swing that maximizes golf swing power. By working on some of the Tiger Woods golf swing concepts, you may quickly shave strokes off your game and get an overall more efficient golf swing.

First, you need to work on your flexibility. Here is a simple exercise that Tiger Woods and other golf professionals use to get a more flexible back swing:

Woods

1. Extend your left arm straight out to the right, if you are a left-handed golfer, or extend out your left arm if you are a right handed player

2. Place the hand you have just extended on top of a golf club that is sitting perpendicular to the ground. Join your other hand on top of the club also.

3. Bend your upper body down, which will put pressure on the club. You should feel a stretch in your shoulder.

4. Stay in this position for about ten to fifteen seconds.

5. Repeat the steps with the opposite side for a follow-through stretch.

Make sure you do this simple exercise right before you tee off or start your round of golf. You can also do it right before any shot to get more distance and power.

Here are some more great concepts that Tiger Woods golf swing executes:

You need to fully rotate your hips during your golf swing. In your final position after your follow-through, you will want your hips pointing directly out towards the direction you want the golf ball to fly. Tiger Woods golf swing has a strong center of gravity. Never sway back and forth during your golf swing and keep your legs steady. Also, keep your body directly over the ball.

Do not try to gain more speed by moving your arms, shoulders, or wrists. Your body should work in coordination. Your golf swing speed is only increased by quickly turning your torso, or middle of the body.

To really understand how Tiger Woods golf swing is executed, try watching and studying a video in slow motion of his golf swing.
